Caterpillar fun

Well we've done it again. Our spring science project. If you remember from last year our caterpillar Hermie, then you will be excited to meet this year's 'Shottie.' Hannah named it. She is really into making up names. Hannah found one and we made it in a temp home (I didn't have the big box that we used last year to give it a 'proper' home). She was so excited about it. Her and Caleb got leaves and sticks. It was great fun. It was so nice to have the same type caterpillar as last year, we already knew how to take care of it.

That day the kids found 2 more catterpillars and we made them a seperat home. They too made their cocoons over night. The next day the kids found 3 more. The same thing happened with them. The next day they found 3 more and I said enouph! They too morphed into their cocoons overnight. We didn't have to worry about feeding them at all. :) We may even have saved these little things. They were in our home during the freak April freeze.

When we went to check on Shottie the next day, he was already making his cocoon! I don't know if he just didn't like us, or if it was his time to morph?!?! This is a pretty neat picture of the beginning stages of the cocoon making.

About 2weeks later we noticed one moth. I'm quite sure it was our Shottie. We had put all the cocoons in one container, however he was the first to be a cocoon. We brought him outside to let him go and he got caught under another caterpillars cocoon. We saved him again.

We had a good time setting moths free for 3 days.
